I'm gonna stomp underneath your bridge like an angry troll I'm gonna chase after my tail like some mixed up dog Then maybe I'll win your love Maybe I'll win your love Do, do, do, do, do ... I'm gonna buzz around your head like a honey bee I'm gonna sacrifice the beast inside of me Then maybe I'll win your love Maybe I'll win your love Do, do, do, do, do ...

Hey smilin' boy why you wearin' that frown Hey smilin' boy why you feeling down? Ain't it strange, strange, strange Ain't it strange, strange, strange Ain't it strange, strange, strange our aching hearts ... hearts, hearts Hey listen you saints, groovin' on your clouds We would be most obliged if you'd send some happiness down Ain't it strange, strange, strange Ain't it strange, strange, strange Ain't it strange, strange, strange our aching hearts ... hearts, hearts If I had a cup, I'd fill it to the brim with joy and love, and we could dive right in Ain't it strange, strange, strange Ain't it strange, strange, strange Ain't it strange, strange, strange our aching hearts Ain't it strange, strange, strange Ain't it strange, strange, strange Ain't it strange, strange, strange our aching hearts

Have you seen Carl's Arrows? Have you seen Carl's Arrows? Here's your mystery prize, a fork in the eye Welcome to Carl's Arrows We're following Carl's Arrows Hey mister! Help me please, I'm the chalk and the cheese Oh, oh Carl's Arrows Have you seen Carl's Arrows? As we look down the hole, we see the black in our souls Oh, oh Carl's Arrows Carl's Arrows And the boogie man comes, to throw a rock at the sun

Happy Head 02:12
Wears baby shoes, dig Bolan blue Cries in the sunshine, curses the Happy Head, head The sacred cow steps out and frowns With big bloated ego, hiding the Happy Head, head Bad news, bad luck, bad debt, bad blood Won't you please, please my Happy Head, head? Ooh, la, la, la ... Bah, bah, bah, bah The sailors sing, hold hands and swing Then fall over sideways, land on their Happy Head, head Bad news, bad luck, bad debt, bad blood Won't you please, please my happy head, head? The cosmic eye floats down from high Through the eye of the needle Crushing the Happy Head, yeah!

Pet Hates 02:31
Why, whenever I look into your eyes do I see Pet Hates, all your Pet Hates? I know that I have empathised with your Pet Hates, all you Pet Hates Try as I may I can't always turn away from your Pet Hates, all your Pet Hates When you don't feel no love inside I, I will love you until I die despite your Pet Hates, all you Pet Hates Try as I may I can't leave you I'll always stay despite your Pet Hates, all you Pet Hates When you don't feel no love inside Yeah, yeah, yeah ...

Slow Parade 03:01
Absolutely grey, slow parade, from Newbury to North Way Pretty boys, pretty girls, watching the traffic lights change Hurry up and change, hurry up and change Down into the square, she combs her hair in the window of a bus café Old man frowns at the ground, thinks one day his luck will change Hurry up and change, hurry up and change Angel or devil? We don't know Too scared to let it show Drift into some stupid haze, like fools, and fade away Ordinary day, slow parade, pale shadows in the rain Scarves wrapped 'round, coats buttoned down We wait for the season to change Hurry up and change, hurry up and change Angel or devil? We don't know Too scared to let it show Drift into some stupid haze, like fools, and fade away

Do, do, do, do, do ... oh, oh, oh Try to forget it, now your dreams are all smashed Try to forget it, put those things in the past Why don't you realise? Why don't you open up your eyes? Your heavy dream won't fly Your heavy dream won't fly Do, do, do, do, do ... oh, oh, oh Once was happy, I once had a good idea Thought you would like it but now you just don't care Suppose that I should realise That it's time to open up my eyes This heavy dream won't fly This heavy dream won't fly

Run 02:40
Shiny shoes, tight and new, run away Running faster, going further, every day I watch you runaway from me The sun shines brighter, everything lights up before your eyes Everything's new, you want to touch that glistening jewel You laugh with someone else and not with me The stars shine brightly, the night breathes quietly inside your mind Telling you to leave, to be free — I'll fall behind And so you runaway from me I watch you runaway from me

Happy Hound 04:09
I get fried like a pig in the sun I can smile, I'm a fortunate one Drive your car to the back of my brain C'mon in the kitchen it's starting rain I was once was a child, once wore a child's frown Once was a child, now I'm a Happy Hound Watch me run like a sinner from hell I get up and I fall right down Cast my smell on a chunk of your life Baby shampoo won't hurt your eyes I was once was a child, once wore a child's frown Once was a child, now I'm a Happy Hound I feel dumb and I don't have to try I get sad and I wonder why Take a bite from the apple of life Beloved husband, beloved wife I was once was a child, once wore a child's frown Once was a child, now I'm a Happy Hound Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo ...

Please remember me while we are apart Now that you have gone I'm right back to the start It's strange without you 'round Is it cold beneath the ground? Hey, here on Sunday Hey, here on Monday Hey, gone on Tuesday Friday in the ground Sometimes when I sleep I still can see your face Forget that you'll be gone tomorrow when I wake I hope we'll meet again but I don't know if we can Hey, here on Sunday Hey, here on Monday Hey, gone on Tuesday Friday in the ground

Drifting away in a sad dream, hiding your head in the sand Passing your days in a lost haze, with no hopes ahead and no plans I know I'm not the one to advise anyone but I know, life it ain't easy when your dead Don't want to think about tomorrow, can't seem to lift me heavy head The world's spinning by outside my window Close my eyes and stay right here And although I'm not the one to advise anyone Well I know, life ain't easy when your dead Dead, dead, dead ... Do, do, do, do ...

about

Recorded in our garage at 18 Cranbrook Avenue on a Fostex 280 4-track cassette deck, 1994–1995. Mixed and mastered with Arnie Van Bussel at Nightshift Studio, Christchurch, New Zealand. Originally released by Flying Nun Records in 1996.

Arnie made hi-res transfers from the original master tapes which, remarkably, he still had (at 96kHz/24-bit). The downloads here are much higher resolution than the cd version (and other streaming services).

I didn't have many instruments when I made it: a 12-string acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, a Casio keyboard, tambourine, maracas; plus a Shure SM58 microphone and a Roland Space Echo. I didn't have a bass guitar at the time so there's not a lot of bottom end to the recordings. Mikey did a nice job remastering it given what he had to work with. It's got a bit of warmth and sounds quite 'analog' to me.

I'm planning to do a vinyl release in 2021 so you might want to hold out until then before buying it (don't let that you stop buying it now if you want though!)

Remastered by Mikey Young, Melbourne, October 2020.

All songs by Alec Bathgate. Except 'Train To Skaville' written by Leonard Dillon and recorded by The Ethiopians in 1968.
